Inflation in France at zero percent in May

Paris, June 15 (IANS) Prices in France rose 0.4 per cent in May, mainly because of fresh food and oil prices that contributed to getting inflation out of negative territory and reaching zero per cent, the National Statistics Institute announced on Wednesday.

In May, fresh products jumped 7.5 per cent, due to an increase of 20.4 per cent in the prices of fruit, which pushed the prices of food products as a whole to rise one per cent, despite the stability of the prices of processed food, Efe news quoted INSEE as saying in a statement.

Also, last month energy prices went up 2.2 per cent because of a 4.1 per cent increase in prices of oil products.

Between May 2015 and the same month this year, inflation was zero percent, since the one percent increase in food and services cancelled the decrease in the prices of manufactured goods (0.6 per cent), energy (5.7 per cent) and petroleum products (10.4 per cent).
